Winterization time is here!

10/24/2023 (Permalink)

Winter in New Mexico can be a beautiful but chilly time of year, with temperatures dropping and snowfall in some areas. To keep your home warm and cozy during the winter months, it's essential to undertake a few key steps to winterize your home effectively. Here are some tips to ensure your New Mexico home is ready for the colder season:

  1. Seal Gaps and Cracks: Check for gaps and cracks around doors, windows, and in your home's foundation. Seal them with weather-stripping, caulk, or foam insulation to prevent cold drafts from entering your home.

  2. Insulate Your Attic: Adequate insulation in your attic helps to retain heat and can reduce energy costs. Make sure your attic is well-insulated to keep warm air inside.

  3. Service Your Heating System: Have your heating system professionally serviced to ensure it's operating efficiently. A well-maintained system will keep your home warm while saving on energy costs.

  4. Protect Pipes: New Mexico's winter nights can be frigid, so insulate your water pipes to prevent freezing and potential damage. Dripping faucets can also help prevent freezing.

  5. Consider Energy-Efficient Windows: Energy-efficient windows can help reduce heat loss and improve your home's energy efficiency.

  6. Reverse Ceiling Fans: If you have ceiling fans, switch their direction to clockwise. This circulates warm air downwards and helps keep your rooms warmer.

  7. Use Draft Stoppers: Place draft stoppers at the bottom of exterior doors to block drafts and keep the cold air out.

  8. Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly to keep your home safe.

By taking these steps to winterize your New Mexico home, you'll be better prepared for the colder season, staying warm and cozy while reducing energy consumption. SERVPRO of Northwest Albuquerque is here for emergency restoration services that may occur from frozen pipes in the winter time. We also service HVAC ducts for better air quality and system efficiency.

How to Winterize!

How to Winterize!

Winter arrives quickly and the temperature rapidly drop.  A lot of people ask, "how do you know how to prepare for a freeze?"  Some people think preparation isn’t necessarily needed.  Plumbing is very susceptible to freezing and commonly bursts with cold temperatures.  When pipes burst this can turn into a very costly situation.

There is a course of action that can be taken to help in preparation for risks of having pipes freeze and burst.

You should inspect your home or business for any exposed water or drain piping that are in non-insulated areas such as a crawlspaces, attics, or exterior walls.  To help the piping in these areas from freezing you should insulate them with foam insulation or wrap them with electrical heating tape.

Any exterior faucets should be inspected, and the water supply should be turned off inside the house.  Garden hoses should be disconnected from outdoor faucets.  The excess water should be drained from the opening of the exterior faucet.  There are insulated covers to go over these exterior faucets and can be purchased at your local hardware store.

Some things to help eliminate risks of pipes freezing on the interior of the home is opening doors under your sinks to promote warm air circulation.  Circulate the water in your home by placing at least one sink in the home on a slow drip.  Keep the temperature in your home warmer than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you do run into a broken or leaking pipe, shut the water supply off immediately.  Doing this will help prevent further additional damage.
